About the Drakensberg
Not only is the Drakensberg a geographical wonder, but it is also a repository of rich history. The range harbours rock and cave art dating back several millennia, providing glimpses into the ancient cultures that once thrived in its shadow. The region is dotted with game reserves and parks, highlighting its significance as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife.
In the year 2000, the uKhahlamba/Drakensberg Park received the prestigious designation of a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscoring its cultural and natural importance. As part of the Great Escarpment, the Drakensberg serves as a formidable divide, separating the expansive high plateaus of the South African interior from the lower lands along the coast.
This imposing range extends from Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, traversing Lesotho, and reaching Eastern Cape province. Along its course, it demarcates the borders of Mpumalanga and Free State provinces, as well as Lesotho on the plateau, from the lower-lying regions of Swaziland and KwaZulu-Natal province near the coast. Beyond its grandeur, the Drakensberg holds a crucial role as the primary watershed of South Africa, giving birth to the mighty Orange River.
It is situated in the Cathkin Peak and Champagne Castle mountain range, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks . The valley is home to several resorts, including the Drakensberg Sun Resort, which offers a range of activities for all ages, including hiking, horse riding, and golfing .Bottom of Form
